North Elmham is a village with real age to it — from the Saxon cathedral ruins to the Victorian and Edwardian terraces along the main street — and a fair number of chimney stacks that have outlived their usefulness.
Many of the older brick-built properties in North Elmham were heated by open fires and solid-fuel ranges well into the twentieth century. Those stacks are now redundant on most homes, and the Norfolk weather — particularly the wind that rolls in from the north across open farmland — accelerates mortar decay and brick spalling on exposed stacks.
